Wow. Steven Spielberg, I shall never doubt thee again.

I have spent a good portion of my online time today reading various reviews of War of the Worlds, and there seem to be mixed feelings. I absolutely loved it, and I am not what you would call a "mindless" moviegoer. I thought the special effects were marvelously done, but they weren't the focal point of the move (re:Independence Day). I thought the ending was a bit too "perfect", but I absolutely LOVED how Spielberg left a lot to your imagination. He didn't feel the need to show you the huge battle, but you knew it was there and could feel the tension mounting.

Are there plot holes? Yes, but most of them are forgiveable. ***SPOILER***

There is a pretty average cliche in alien movies, and it is a fill in the blank. Here it is: You mean to tell me that these aliens can figure out interstellar travel, but aren't smart enough to figure out _______________?? A lot of this is explained in the book, but Spielberg kind of ignores this. They can travel millions of miles, create huge tripods with insane death rays, but don't have the sense to test the water or air before they use it? I don't buy it. But, it doesn't detract from the movie. The part where the first tripod rises from the ground is AMAZING, with the ground moving in a circle and ripping apart buildings. And the sound design is the best I have ever heard. The foghorn of the tripods is one of the most foreboding sounds I have ever heard, and the death rays sound makes me want to run and hide. It was freaking incredible.

War of the Worlds is quite a good movie. I might even pay again to see it, and if you know me, that is pretty high praise.

Whatever I want it to be. My thoughts, my family, my rants. All in one delicious, appetizing sampler.
